Features
The correct boneguard needs to protect the pack without adding unnecessary material or interfering with the wrapping and sealing process. Selection should be based on the bone profile, packaging material, handling conditions and level of puncture resistance required.
High puncture resistance
Non-woven boneguard combines a polypropylene base with a wax coating to provide strong resistance to sharp or exposed bones. It is commonly used with demanding bone-in meat applications and vacuum-packed products.
Different material options
Waxed crepe boneguard offers a higher cellulose content and a different balance of protection and material construction. A clear LDPE film option is also available where a smooth, transparent protective layer is preferred.
Bespoke formats
Boneguard can be supplied in sheets, reels and discs, with dimensions developed around the joint, cut, pack and packing method. Trials help establish the most appropriate grade and format before regular supply begins.
Example Boneguard Applications
The examples below illustrate common applications, although the final construction, grade and dimensions should be confirmed for each product and packing process.
Lamb Shanks and Bone-In Joints
Protective materials positioned around exposed bones to help reduce punctures during vacuum packing, storage and transport.
Abattoir-to-Processor Packs
High-strength boneguard for cut joints moved between processing facilities, where maintaining the integrity of the vacuum pack is important.
T-Bone and Retail Meat Packs
Bespoke sheets or discs for sharp-edged cuts prepared for shrink wrapping, foodservice or retail presentation.
Boneguard FAQs
Common questions about choosing the right construction, grade and format for bone-in meat packaging.
Which products commonly use boneguard?
Typical applications include lamb shanks, bone-in joints, T-bone steaks and other cuts with sharp or exposed bones. It can be used in packs prepared for processing, transport, foodservice or retail.
Which types of boneguard are available?
We offer three main options: wax-coated non-woven polypropylene, waxed crepe paper and clear LDPE film. Each provides a different balance of puncture resistance, material composition, flexibility and presentation.
How is the correct grade selected?
Selection depends on the sharpness and position of the bone, the surrounding packaging, handling conditions and the level of puncture resistance required. An existing sample or pack specification can help identify a suitable starting point.
